5 Questions with Laura Brophy

1. As a life-long Southern Californian, What would you say are the defining elements of Californian lifestyle and design?

For me, California design is all about the California lifestyle! That mean’s blending indoor and outdoor living spaces while incorporating organic finishes, colors, and textures that complement the local environment. It’s all about luxurious yet livable spaces crafted using natural and low-maintenance materials.

2. Your projects are all very distinct, but all carry an organic, earthly and peaceful feel, what types of design features do you incorporate throughout to help you to achieve this?

Definitely! I believe that a home should function as a refuge; a place of peace, tranquility, and inspiration - I always strive to incorporate design elements that create that feeling. Think #VacationVibes or #SpaVibes! We typically include lots of natural materials in neutral and transitional palates. I am such a strong believer in the power of design - the spaces in which we spend our time can greatly impact our lifestyle, our energy, and even our health. I mean, why not live in home that feels grounded and peaceful to improve how you live?

3. You design so many interesting spaces throughout the whole home using stone surfaces. What are the characteristics that draw you to stone?

As I mentioned, we love incorporating natural materials into our projects! The variations in stone and natural materials means that no two installations will ever look the same. I have long been a fan of wabi-sabi – where the variations and imperfections are what create the perfect aesthetic. My love of incorporating stone surfaces into our projects is definitely a result of the wabi-sabi aesthetic.

4. We love how you create design moments in every space, even the smallest ones. What are ways you like to make impacts in small spaces?

Now we’re getting to the really fun stuff! We love using Ann Sacks products to create unique, memorable spaces in our clients’ homes. From the Liaison mosaics by Kelly Wearstler to the La Palma Mosaic, Ann Sacks has curated such an amazing collection of hard surfaces and materials that can add visual interest to any space, big or small.

5. In addition to your Design Studio, you have a furniture line. Tell us about your collection and how you branched into furniture design.

Thank you for asking…we are so proud of the Laura Brophy X Faustine furniture collection. This whole process started organically – we were working with a custom furniture manufacturer on a couple of pieces for a client in Santa Monica, and got into a fairly deep conversation regarding the (at the time) current state of the furniture industry. One thing led to the next, and we decided to develop a furniture collection together. My goal was to create a beautiful, yet functional and low maintenance collection that was stocked locally, and available for immediate shipment. We have been working on this for several years, and I am thrilled with the pieces we have created.
