5 Questions With: Noelle Interiors

We spoke with Noelle Parks, Principal Designer and owner of Noelle Interiors a Manhatten Beach full service design firm and custom furniture brand.

You manage a full-service design firm, showroom, and custom furniture line- How do you balance everything and what does self-care look like for you?

Well, there are definitely not enough hours in each day, but maintaining a healthy balance is important. When I’m not at the office, you’ll find me tending to my new baby at home, exercising, or hanging out with friends. I do find I’m more creative and organized if I’m busy, so I make it work and love doing it!

I will always strive to be more like my amazing mother-in-law, who taught me the impact you can have by treading life with grace and making it look effortless. Like her, I’m full of strength and here to create, teach and share.

Your designs are all unique but give off a sense of relaxation. What are some of your tips for achieving a peaceful environment?

I love creating spaces that feel like a relaxed retreat. The key is to design with a purpose. No fluff needed - each element must work towards creating a balanced environment and soothing backdrop for our complex and chaotic lives.

Are there certain materials or components you come back to again and again?

I’m drawn to organic handmade finishes combined with modern fixtures.

Some of my favorite tiles are Zellige terracotta, glazed bricks, and handmade ceramics. Ann Sacks Savoy series is particularly amazing with the extensive variety of field tiles and mosaics, and all the lovely patterns and textures from their collaborative designers. There’s probably a Savoy series tile or mosaic in every house I’ve designed!

The way you use tile is very creative and fresh, at what stage in your design process do you consider your tile selections?

We start our design process with a conceptual meeting with the client to establish their intended style. We often show preliminary materials including tile in this first meeting, merely to gauge their initial feedback.

From this first meeting we take into account the client’s direction to create inspiration design boards, and simultaneously begin blocking out interior elevations.

The next design meeting will involve walking the client through elevations of each space and presenting finish samples that may be applied and what areas we are recommending. This might happen in the third or fourth meeting and is considered the “Design Development Phase.”

You design primarily in Southern California, where the outdoor living is just as important as indoor, what are some ways to create an outdoor entertaining area?

I’ve always loved the indoor/outdoor lifestyle California affords us. Entertaining is a passion of mine, so outdoor design is such a fun part of what we do.

The front entry is about creating a greeting that makes guests feel invited. We often accomplish this through landscape lighting and a creative hardscape – might be modern concrete pads or cheerful encaustic concrete tiles. Whether traditional or contemporary, I always encourage as many layers of landscaping as possible.

The backyard is where the magic happens. We are often designing for multiple uses – BBQ area, outdoor dining, firepit, and more recently, quite a few pools. In the end, the finishes need to be durable, the textures thoughtful, and the mood inviting. I thrive creating spaces that encourage fun and a stylish backdrop for entertaining.
